POKOTABI / Ōgyōchi
愛玉子
At Aigyokushi in Ueno Sakuragi, diners can enjoy traditional Taiwanese jelly made from plant seeds, alongside varied desserts pairing it with lemon, wine sauce, or caramel.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set along the walking routes connecting Yanaka and Ueno, Aigyokushi (愛玉子) is a traditional sweets café built around the Taiwanese specialty jelly that shares its name. Made from plant seeds, o-gyochi (aiyu jelly) is a light, clean-tasting jelly popular in dishes such as "Kōri O-gyochi," dressed with lemon syrup, or served with tapioca and dried fruit.
Beyond straightforward preparations, the café is distinguished by its wide range of dessert variations. The menu includes "Chī Caramel," layering caramel sauce with sweet bean paste, and "Chī Cream Anmitsu," which pairs brown sugar syrup and coarse red bean paste with cheese ice cream, alongside more grown-up combinations like wine sauce in "Chī Wine" and citrus-scented "Chī Brandy."
Coffee, cream sodas, and shaved ice are also served inside, making it an easy place to take a break during a stroll. Takeout is available on certain days, offering the option to carry along the refreshing sweet as you explore the neighborhood or bring it home as a souvenir.
